PAINLESSLY TREAT YOUR GINGIVITIS

Gingivitis is a serious condition that requires prompt and thorough dental care. With the right dental team, you'll be able to prevent or effectively treat gum disease

Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue that can lead to tooth loss and other serious health problems. It is caused by bacteria that build up on the teeth and gums, causing inflammation and damage. Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it can also cause other health problems such as heart disease and stroke.

The first stage called gingivitis has easy tell-tale signs and symptoms. This includes: red, puffy, and bleeding gums . When left untreated, gum disease can get worse and becomes periodontitis. Periodontitis is a gum disease that can damage the tissues and bone that support your teeth. It's usually caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth. Plaque can harden into tartar, which leads to gum inflammation. If not treated, periodontitis can destroy the gum tissue and bone around the infected area. Common signs and symptoms of periodontitis are: bleeding gums, gum recession, gum inflammation, gum abscesses, loose teeth and bad breath. At Nu Dentistry Cypress, we offer modern solutions to treating and managing all stages of gum disease. With our state-of-the-art technology we will be able to detect gum disease even before it happens. If your gum disease has progressed, we'll offer the right treatments to stop the spread of infection and prevent tooth loss. We'll be able to preserve your smile and maintain your overall health. THE STAGES OF GUM DISEASE

By treating your gum disease earlier, our team can better help your smile make a full recovery

GINGIVITIS

The first (and easiest to treat) stage of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis occurs after a few days of plaque and tartar build up below the gums. When not removed, plaque and tartar causes oral bacteria that irritates the gums and also causes inflammation of the soft tissues. The first symptoms are red, swollen and tender gums. Fortunately with regular and thorough cleaning the effects are reversible.

MILD PERIODONTITIS

If the gingivitis is not managed and treated early, it slowly progresses to periodontitis. The effects of periodontitis are more permanent and the disease is much more difficult to treat. At this stage, the gums begin to recede creating pockets that trap even more plaque and tartar. This disease also attacks the jawbone and all connective tissues around the gum.

MODERATE PERIODONTITIS

Gradually, periodontitis worsens causing even more damage to the gum and also causing the gum pockets to deepen. Gum pockets continue to deepen and even more bones and soft tissues are destroyed, This causes the teeth to loosen. Even more seriously, oral bacteria gets into the bloodstream posing a considerable health risk to your body.

ADVANCED PERIODONTITIS

In the last stages of periodontitis, approximately 50 to 90% of the periodontal tissues are now permanently damaged. The foundation of the teeth is now destroyed causing lose of teeth. At this stage, several teeth risk extraction.

At-home dental care

Great at-home oral hygiene is the best way to prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease. A regular routine consists of brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Also making sure that you attend all your dental appointments will help you prevent gum disease. A great dentist will be able to use the right tools to effectively remove plaque and tartar build up. The right toothbrush and brushing technique will also work to promote your gum health.

DEEP CLEANING

If you are unable to treat gingivitis early enough, periodontitis sets in. At this stage only deep cleaning by a professional dental team can effectively manage this stage of the disease.

A deep cleaning at this stage is more than the routine cleaning you get at our regular dental visits. Your dentist will clean your teeth and gum thoroughly all the way down to the roots. This cleaning is usually done in two phases: scaling and root planing.

POCKET REDUCTION

When deep cleaning is unable to stop the spread of the disease, oral surgery will be needed. A pocket reduction surgery will be performed to give your dentist better access so they can thoroughly clean gums and the tooth. During the procedure, a flap of gum tissue is pulled back, the oral surgeon is then able to clean the root and gums. After the roots have been polished and cleaned, the gum flap is put back tighter than before. This is to reduce the size of the gum pockets.

GRAFTING

Dental grafting (Allografts) are often used to treat gum disease by filling in gaps in the gum line that have been caused by bone loss. Dental grafts replace missing gum and bone tissue helping secure your teeth and prevent teeth lose.

Gum Disease Questions

In some cases, gum disease can cause a dental abscess to form. This pocket of pus is incredibly painful, and if not safely drained, can spread infection throughout the mouth and body. In extreme circumstances, it can even lead to potentially life-threatening sepsis. Additionally, late-stage gum disease can cause oral bacteria to reach the bloodstream and infect the rest of your body. On a long-term scale, severe periodontal disease can put you at increased risk for conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and certain cancers.

Yes, gingivitis can go away on its own as long as you maintain excellent and consistent dental hygiene habits. With about two weeks of consistent brushing and flossing, the gums can return to a healthy pink as your gingivitis is not just cured but reversed. However, more severe periodontal disease stages should be seen by our team at Nu Dentistry for professional care. In these cases, the damage to your smile is permanent, but we can keep your gum disease in check.

Deep cleanings are usually done in two to four visits to comprehensively clean your entire smile. Cleaning one-fourth of your smile takes about 45 minutes. Patients with four appointments will have four 45-minute visits, while those with two appointments will have two 90-minute visits.

Some patients may only need one deep cleaning in their life. However, others will require regular scaling and root planing every three to four months to manage their gum disease. If deep cleanings are needed more frequently, we may recommend pocket reduction surgery instead.

Luckily, our periodontists ensure your deep cleaning is as comfortable as possible! While periodontal disease causes the gum to become tender and sensitive, we will first numb the area with a local anesthetic so your visit is pain-free. We also offer dental sedation like laughing gas to give you more comprehensive relaxation, both in mind and body.

The first and most recognized gum disease symptoms are gums that are red, swollen, and painful to the touch and gingival bleeding. If periodontitis sets in, you may also notice your teeth appearing longer than normal, persistent bad breath, tooth sensitivity, new spaces appearing between teeth, and tooth looseness.

The Best Dentist In Cypress, Texas
Sandra Archuleta

We have been looking for a family dentist for a long time, we have tried a bunch of places but nothing felt quite like home. Not too long ago we stumbled upon Nu Dentistry and met Dr. Ali. Not only was he professional, kind, and gentle, but he always finds a way to fit us in when we need an appointment. He’s also pretty funny! I appreciate that he takes the time to explain what he’s doing, before he does it. That really puts me at ease.
